Wegovy and loose skin: how common it is, and what actually helps

· 5 min read · Dan d'Auvergne-Massie

Wegovy contains semaglutide, the same medicine as Ozempic, at the dose used for weight management. In the main clinical trial of that dose, people lost an average of 14.9% of their body weight over 68 weeks, and about half lost 15% or more. [1] For someone starting at 110 kilos, 15% is about 16 kilos.

That amount of loss sits right in the range where loose skin stops being unusual. This page looks at how common it is, what the numbers can and cannot tell you, and what helps. It is not about the medicine itself: Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine in Australia, and decisions about it belong with your prescriber. [7]

How common is loose skin at this amount of loss?

The best recent numbers come from a 2026 survey of 1,226 people in an American telehealth weight management program, most of them on GLP-1 medicines. Skin sagging was reported by: [2]

Weight lostReported skin sagging
Less than 10% of body weight15%
10 to 20%44%
More than 20%72%

Decreased facial volume followed the same pattern, reported by 13%, 37% and 50% of each group. [2]

Read those numbers carefully. They are people's own reports, not a clinician's examination. They come from people who chose to answer a survey in one program, mostly women, so they describe that group rather than all Australians on Wegovy. And they show an association with the amount lost, not proof that the medicine causes anything by itself. [3] What they do show is that at the amount of loss typical on Wegovy, somewhere between a third and a half of people notice looser skin, and it becomes the majority experience once losses pass 20%.

For comparison, excess skin after bariatric surgery, where losses are usually larger, affects more than 70% of adults. [4]

Why the amount matters more than the medicine

Skin that has been stretched over a larger frame for years has adapted to that size. When the volume underneath goes, the skin has to remodel to follow it, and there is a limit to how far it can. The more volume that goes, the more likely some skin is left over.

That is why the brand of medicine is not the useful question. Whether you lose 15% on Wegovy, on another medicine, after surgery or through diet and exercise, the skin is dealing with the same change. Whether semaglutide adds anything beyond the weight loss itself has not been established.

Will it tighten up again on its own?

Partly, for some people. Skin continues to remodel for months after weight settles, and mild looseness and crepey texture can improve over the following year, more so in younger people and after smaller losses. There is no validated timeline and no reliable way to predict your own result: the best review of what predicts loose skin after large weight loss found the evidence could not identify who is at higher risk. [4]

Skin that hangs or folds when you stand is different. It is surplus to your new shape and does not retract. The skin concern checklist helps you describe what you are seeing before a consultation, and loose skin or fat explains why some of what looks like loose skin may still be a fat layer.

Face first, body later

Many people notice their face before anything else, often within months of starting. That is partly because facial fat sits in thin, visible layers, and partly because a face is scrutinised in a way a thigh is not. The 2026 survey found decreased facial volume was reported almost as often as skin sagging at each level of loss. [2] Lost facial volume and loose facial skin have different fixes, which the face and neck page explains.

Body skin tends to become the bigger question later, as the loss accumulates. Where it shows depends on where you carried weight:

  • the abdomen, where most people carry the most skin after a large loss;
  • the arms, where skin under the upper arm often hangs;
  • the thighs and buttocks, where inner thigh skin chafes and outer thigh skin drops;
  • the chest and breasts, for men as well as women.

Each of those pages sets out what non-surgical treatment can realistically do in that area, when surgery is the answer, and Australian costs.

When is the right time to think about treatment?

When your weight has settled and stayed settled. On Wegovy the dose is increased gradually and loss often continues for many months, so a year or more can pass before your shape stops changing. Treating skin before then risks paying for a result on a body that is still moving.

For non-surgical treatment, stability gives you a fair baseline to judge any improvement against. For surgery, the Medicare items for skin removal after significant weight loss all ask for at least six months of stable weight, and many surgeons prefer longer. The Medicare post sets out what the criteria say.

Things worth raising at your next appointment

The appointment where Wegovy is prescribed or reviewed is mostly about the medicine. These are worth bringing up yourself:

  • How much protein you should be eating. Appetite drops, and protein is easy to miss. The trial evidence in adults losing weight supports more than 1.3 grams per kilogram of body weight per day. [5]
  • Strength training. Reduced strength was reported more often with greater weight loss in the same survey. [2] Muscle does a lot for how your body looks as the weight comes off.
  • Any rashes or rubbing in skin folds. They are treatable now, and a record of them matters if you ever consider surgery.
  • What a realistic end point looks like for you, so you know when your weight is likely to settle.

What helps while you wait

Protein and resistance training protect what is under your skin. Daily sunscreen protects the skin itself, and is one of the few things with a randomised trial behind it for slowing visible skin ageing. [6] A retinoid and a barrier-repair moisturiser support texture, though no cream removes a fold; the topicals guide covers what earns its place.

When you are ready to look at treatment, start with what the options can and cannot do, then the treatment comparison. If your skin hangs, the surgical options guide and the costs by procedure are the right next reads. The free guide has a tracking template for the months in between.

Frequently asked questions

There is no figure for Wegovy specifically. In a 2026 survey of people in a weight management program, mostly on GLP-1 medicines, skin sagging was reported by 44% of those who lost 10 to 20% of their body weight and 72% of those who lost more than 20%. In the main Wegovy trial, average loss was about 15%.

No. Wegovy and Ozempic contain the same medicine, semaglutide, at different doses. Any difference in skin comes down to how much weight a person loses, not which brand they use.

Not reliably. Enough protein, resistance training, daily sunscreen and not smoking support your skin and body composition, but none has been shown to prevent loose skin after a large loss. Do not change your dose for skin reasons without talking to your prescriber.

Decisions about medication and dose belong with your prescriber.
