What it actually does
The four categories work through different mechanisms, and their evidence bases vary:
- Microcurrent (NuFACE Mini, Trinity, Trinity+) delivers very-low-amperage electrical current to facial muscles and skin. The advertised effect is a temporary "lift" through muscle stimulation; some studies suggest a small contribution to fibroblast and ATP-related cellular activity. The clinical evidence for measurable long-term skin tightening is limited; the visual effect is real but mostly transient (hours to a day). [1]
- Low-power radiofrequency (TriPollar Stop, Foreo Bear) uses the same physics as clinic RF, current passing through the skin produces dermal heating and a fibroblast collagen response, but at a fraction of the energy. AU clinic platforms deliver tens to hundreds of watts of focused energy over a single session; consumer devices deliver perhaps a watt over many sessions. Evidence shows a small but measurable tightening effect with consistent use, well below clinic platforms. [2]
- Red and near-infrared LED therapy (Omnilux Contour Face, CurrentBody Skin LED, Dr Dennis Gross SpectraLite) uses 633 nm (red) and 830 nm (near-infrared) light to target mitochondria and modulate fibroblast activity. The evidence base for photobiomodulation in dermatology is the strongest of the at-home categories, with studies showing measurable improvement in fine lines and skin texture over 8–12 weeks of consistent use. - Multi-modality combos (Solawave, ZIIP, Foreo Bear 2) combine some subset of microcurrent, RF, red/infrared LED, and vibration in one device. Evidence is generally limited to the device manufacturer's own studies; the most defensible claims are usually about the LED component.
For loose post-weight-loss skin, the realistic role of an at-home device is:
- A daily prompt to spend 5–10 focused minutes on your skincare program, which is the highest-leverage thing they do
- A between-sessions maintenance tool when you have an in-clinic protocol running
- LED masks specifically: a defensible solo investment if budget is limited and an in-clinic program is months away

Good candidates
- Patients between in-clinic sessions, or maintaining after a complete protocol
- Mild laxity where in-clinic treatment isn't accessible or isn't yet planned
- Someone who genuinely will use the device consistently for 6+ months

Less suitable
- Anyone expecting an in-clinic-tier result from a device that costs less than one Sydney CBD treatment
- Pacemakers or implanted electronic devices (avoid microcurrent and RF)
- Active facial infection or inflammatory skin disease (defer)
- Significant abdominal or arm redundancy after major weight loss, the body coverage area is too large for these devices to do anything useful
- Anyone who buys the device and uses it for two weeks (most people)
What the experience is like
Each category has its own daily-routine implications:
- NuFACE microcurrent: apply the conductive primer gel, glide the device along marked muscle pathways for 5 minutes per side. The temporary "lift" effect is most visible in the few hours after use.
- TriPollar Stop / Foreo Bear: apply conductive gel, move the device in slow circular motions for 1–2 minutes per zone. A warming sensation is normal; don't park the device on one spot.
- LED mask (Omnilux, CurrentBody): wear for 10–15 minutes, hands-free, on clean skin, ideally daily. Some masks are flexible silicone (more comfortable, more expensive); rigid masks are cheaper but tolerable.
- Solawave-style multi-modality wand: combine into the same daily skincare ritual, gliding across face and neck for 5–10 minutes.
There is no downtime, no recovery, and (for properly used devices) no risk of visible aftermath, but the effort is months of daily commitment. That's the real cost.

- Eye exposure with high-power LED masks, use the supplied eye protection and never look directly into a lit panel.
- Facial-nerve effects: extreme microcurrent abuse can produce transient muscle twitching; correct use is well within safe levels.
- Pacemakers and implanted electronic devices: contraindication for microcurrent and RF.
- Counterfeit devices: a real problem on marketplace listings. Counterfeits may have unsafe energy delivery or misleading wavelengths.
- Disappointing results: the most common outcome, particularly when expectations were calibrated by in-clinic before-and-after photos.
How to choose well
Practical advice for the AU buyer:

- Be honest with yourself about whether you'll actually use it for 6+ months. The device that you use is better than the more powerful device that lives in a drawer.
